The Beginning

1 In the beginning^(A) God created^(B) the heavens^(C) and the earth.^(D) ²Now the earth was formless^(E) and empty,^(F) darkness was over the surface of the deep,^(G) and the Spirit of God^(H) was hovering^(I) over the waters.

³And God said,^(J) “Let there be light,” and there was light.^(K) ⁴God saw that the light was good,^(L) and he separated the light from the darkness.^(M) ⁵God called^(N) the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”^(O) And there was evening, and there was morning^(P)—the first day.

Psalm 29

A psalm of David.

¹Ascribe to the Lord,^(A) you heavenly beings,^(B)
ascribe to the Lord glory^(C) and strength.
²Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his^[a] holiness.^(D)

³The voice^(E) of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory^(F) thunders,^(G)
    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.^(H)
⁴The voice of the Lord is powerful;^(I)
    the voice of the Lord is majestic.
⁵The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.^(J)
⁶He makes Lebanon leap^(K) like a calf,
    Sirion^[b]^(L) like a young wild ox.^(M)
⁷The voice of the Lord strikes
    with flashes of lightning.^(N)
⁸The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.^(O)
⁹The voice of the Lord twists the oaks^[c]^(P)
    and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”^(Q)

¹⁰The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;^(R)
the Lord is enthroned as King forever.^(S)
¹¹The Lord gives strength to his people;^(T)
the Lord blesses his people with peace.^(U)

Romans 6:1-11

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

6 What shall we say, then?^(A) Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?^(B) ²By no means! We are those who have died to sin;^(C) how can we live in it any longer? ³Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized^(D) into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? ⁴We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death^(E) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead^(F) through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.^(G)

⁵For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.^(H) ⁶For we know that our old self^(I) was crucified with him^(J) so that the body ruled by sin^(K) might be done away with,^[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin^(L)— ⁷because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.^(M)

⁸Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.^(N) ⁹For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,^(O) he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.^(P) ¹⁰The death he died, he died to sin^(Q) once for all;^(R) but the life he lives, he lives to God.

¹¹In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin^(S) but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

⁴And so John the Baptist^(A) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance^(B) for the forgiveness of sins.^(C) ⁵The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. ⁶John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist,^(D) and he ate locusts^(E) and wild honey. ⁷And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.^(F) ⁸I baptize you with^[a] water, but he will baptize you with^[b] the Holy Spirit.”^(G)

The Baptism and Testing of Jesus^(H)^(I)

⁹At that time Jesus came from Nazareth^(J) in Galilee and was baptized by John^(K) in the Jordan. ¹⁰Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.^(L) ¹¹And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,^(M) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”^(N)
